The Brooklyn
of Auckland is
Karangahape Road (K'Road).
K'Road is where Auckland stops trying to be polished and starts being interesting. Rainbow crosswalks, late-night Lebanese, vinyl shops, and dive bars stacked inside one long strip of hill. St Kevin's Arcade alone holds more personality than entire suburbs. The energy picks up after dark and doesn't quit until the small hours.
K'Road packs 19 bars and nightclubs into a single strip, with 5 restaurants landing in Auckland's Metro Top 50 in the same year.
Other cool neighborhoods in Auckland.
Ponsonby
Ponsonby Road is the older sibling who got successful and moved into nice restaurants. Great brunch scene, expensive candles, and enough wine bars to stay busy on a Saturday.
Grey Lynn
Grey Lynn is where K'Road people go when they have kids. Quiet streets, good coffee, excellent park. Still has edge in the restaurants if you know where to look.
Kingsland
Kingsland runs along the train line to Eden Park. Pub-heavy, unpretentious, loud on game days. A solid strip of bars and Thai restaurants that never disappoints.
Where to go in Karangahape Road (K'Road).
K'Road runs steeply between the CBD and Ponsonby, so wherever you sleep here you're central to everything.
K'Road does food without a theme - Lebanese flatbreads and fresh pasta from inside St Kevin's Arcade, Italian-NZ comfort food at Coco's Cantina, obsessive espresso at Open Coffee.
Start your day climbing the spiral staircase to Nick von K in the La Gonda Arcade for pounamu set into bold silver, wander into Artspace Aotearoa for whatever's showing, then duck through St Kevin's Arcade to the courtyard stairs down to Myers Park.
