The night ends among ninety-nine people and a band at the cash-only Midway Café.

Across from the Forest Hills T, two fine-dining veterans have spent nearly a decade fermenting everything in sight. The fried chicken comes with maple ume and giardiniera, the koji risotto with Parmesan shoyu. Since late 2025 there's a marble bar and Detroit squares next door, and the prices already fold in tax and service.
Chef Luke Fetbroth knocked out the kitchen wall in 2022, which gave the dining room a skylight and a two-seat counter with a view of the pasta being rolled. Order the cappelletti stuffed with Taleggio and balsamic, then a slab of the rectangular tomato pie. Tiramisu comes in a bowl, not a slice.
Boston's first Scottish pub, opened by Jason Waddleton in 2010 and now filling the old Bella Luna space in the Haffenreffer Brewery. Haggis, Cullen Skink, and Tennent's-battered haddock with minted mushy peas under antler chandeliers and purple-thistle wallpaper. Wear plaid on Saturday Kilt Night and the deep-fried Mars bar is free.
Spanish small plates served out of a Victorian house on Centre Street, with the bar wedged into the old living room and high-tops in a former bedroom. Order the lamb bocadillo and stuffed Medjool dates, then work through the sherry list. Pick a record from the back-room shop before dinner and staff will spin it while you eat.
The Tu Y Yo crew from Somerville took over the old El Oriental de Cuba space after it closed in 2023, hung papel picado, and started steaming tamales in banana leaves as well as corn husks. Order the mole colorado tlaxcalteca, or the grasshopper tacos if you're feeling brave. Crispy tilapia tacos for everyone else.
Jamaica Plain drinks in bars with long memories; three generations of Griffins have poured at Costello's Tavern since 1934. The Brendan Behan Pub runs twenty draft lines, Allagash and Lamplighter beside the Guinness, and lets Rafa's burrito pop-up handle dinner. Drawdown Brewing pours a cream ale and an alt bier up the hill from Sam Adams.

A former civil engineer's 50-seat taproom up the hill from Sam Adams, pouring a cream ale, alt bier, IPA and porter without a single hazy gimmick. The screens run women's sports, not Sunday football. Open since December 2023 in Egleston Square, it has already brewed a collaboration with its big neighbor down Washington Street.
Ninety-nine people fit inside this cash-only storefront on Washington Street, and most nights they're there for the band. Music runs seven nights a week, Queeraoke takes Thursdays, and the walls are papered in show posters and yellowed clippings going back decades. Two sets of brothers ran it from 1937; Jay Balerna has run it alone since 2011.
Twenty draft lines pour Allagash, Lamplighter, and Exhibit A next to the Guinness, and there's no kitchen to speak of - Rafa's burrito pop-up handles dinner from the back. Cash only since Gerry Brennan and Butch Murray opened it in 1988; the ATM by the door does steady business. Hyde Square's proper local.
The Irish name came from an Italian owner in 1960, when every bar on Centre Street had one. The trolley painted on the inside door still has a working headlight, and the 2024 handover to a 12-year employee changed nothing. Order the dry scallops, delivered daily, with the thick hand-battered onion rings.
Three generations of Griffins have poured here since 1934, when an Irish immigrant got his license from Mayor Curley himself. The long bar runs dim along the right, booths in back, Boston Burger Company running the kitchen for wings and a proper cheeseburger. Bring cash, and show up Wednesday for live-band karaoke.
Few chains reach Jamaica Plain, so the cafés are small counters with names attached. Cafe Siete has two seats on Pond Street and pulls Barrington Coffee. Third Cliff Bakery began as croissants sold from a tricycle called Rosie at the Egleston Farmers' Market, and Monumental Market on South Street is Boston's only fully nut-free bakery.

Three farmers' market veterans run this seatless South Street counter, and not one peanut or tree nut crosses the threshold - Boston's only fully nut-free bakery, and that's the founding rule. Handmade pop-tarts and honey butter scones sit near El Colombiano espresso, with records and houseplants stacked under Kyia Watkins' sun and moonrise murals.
Meg Crowley sold croissants from a tricycle cart called Rosie at the Egleston Farmers' Market for five years before opening this corner café on Washington Street in 2020. Birch plywood partitions split the room into three seating zones. Order the kimchi cheddar croissant; vegans get more than the usual token muffin.
Two counter seats and not much else in this Pond Street storefront Jeb Taylor pulled back from vacancy. He pulls Barrington Coffee, the only shop in this stretch of JP that does, into tight cortados and macchiatos worth the wait. Rotating whole beans by the register if you want to take the argument home.
The 1981 original still churns every batch from scratch inside a converted Victorian firehouse on Centre Street, which also serves as the chain's kitchen and head office. Summer brings Fresh Peach, hand-cut fruit marinated in brown sugar, alongside the Peanut Butter Cookies 'n' Cream. They've roasted their own fair-trade beans since 1999, and everything is Kosher.
Inside the old Brewery Complex since 2007, with big windows, murals, and popovers that outsell most of the pastry case. Sandwiches come on Fornax bread from Roslindale with spreads made in-house; the earl grey lavender scone is the sleeper pick. A pay-it-forward voucher board covers a coffee or lunch for whoever needs one.
Do I need a reservation at restaurants in Jamaica Plain?
Rarely. Jamaica Plain runs on walk-ins. Most places along the main commercial strip are small and casual, and many do not take bookings at all. The exception is weekend brunch, where waits of 30-45 minutes are common after 10:30 - arrive before 10:00 or go on a weekday. For the handful of sit-down dinner spots, a same-day online booking for a Friday or Saturday is smart but usually not essential.
What's the tipping culture at restaurants in USA?
Tip 18-22% on the pre-tax bill at any sit-down restaurant. Servers in Massachusetts earn a reduced hourly wage and rely on tips. At counter-service cafés and taquerias, the card reader will prompt you with 15-25% options - 15% or a couple of dollars is fine. At bars, one dollar per beer or two per cocktail. Boston adds a 7% meals tax on top of menu prices.
Are restaurants in Boston cash-only or do they take cards?
Cards work almost everywhere, including tap-to-pay with a phone. Jamaica Plain does have a few holdouts: some small Latin-American spots at the north end of the neighborhood and a couple of pizza counters prefer or require cash. Carry $20-40 as a backup. Note that many places now tack on a 3-4% surcharge for card payments, posted near the register.
What time do restaurants close in Jamaica Plain?
Kitchens close early by big-city standards. Most restaurants stop taking orders between 21:00 and 22:00, earlier on Sunday through Wednesday. Cafés and bakeries commonly shut by 17:00 or 18:00. Bars can legally serve until 2:00 in Boston, but many in Jamaica Plain call last orders around midnight or 1:00. Plan to eat dinner by 20:30 to be safe.
Are there vegan or vegetarian options in Jamaica Plain?
Yes, and more than anywhere else in Boston. Jamaica Plain has been a vegetarian stronghold since the 1970s, and nearly every menu on the main strip marks vegan and vegetarian dishes. You will find fully plant-based cafés, vegan bakeries, and Latin-American spots with bean and plantain plates. The weekly farmers market and the neighborhood food co-op are good for self-catering.
Is tap water safe to drink in Boston?
Completely. Boston tap water comes from protected reservoirs in central Massachusetts and consistently ranks among the best-tasting municipal water in the country. Restaurants bring tap water free on request - ask for 'tap' or 'regular' water, since 'water' alone sometimes gets you bottled. Bring a refillable bottle; cafés will usually fill it without charge.
What's the late-night food scene in Jamaica Plain?
Thin. After 22:00 your options shrink to a few pizza and sub counters, a taqueria or two at the north end of the neighborhood, and bar kitchens that typically run until midnight on weekends. Massachusetts bans discounted drink specials, so there is no happy-hour culture to speak of. For anything after 1:00, take a ride-share into downtown Boston or Allston.
