Book 6-8 weeks ahead for stays between May and September, when the dry winter pulls domestic travellers north. School holidays (April, late June, late September) push rates up sharply. For January or February, you can usually book 2-3 weeks out - the wet season and humidity thin demand. Major events at the river arenas spike prices city-wide.

West End is safe day and night, with foot traffic on the main strip running late thanks to bars and restaurants. The residential side streets are quiet but well-lit. Standard caution applies near the river paths after midnight. The area skews student, queer-friendly and progressive, so solo travellers generally find it comfortable. Rideshares are quick and cheap if you'd rather not walk.

West End itself has limited hotel stock - it's mostly Queenslander houses and low-rise apartments. You'll find a handful of small design-led stays and serviced apartments, plus short-term rentals in converted warehouses. For larger boutique options, look just across the river or toward South Bank, both a 10-15 minute walk or one bus stop away.

Tipping isn't expected in Australia. Hotel staff earn a legal minimum wage well above US levels, so housekeeping and porters aren't relying on gratuities. If someone goes well beyond, $5-10 AUD is generous but optional. Room service bills don't include a tip line. Skipping it entirely is normal and won't affect service.

Standard check-in is 2pm or 3pm across most Brisbane hotels. Early check-in before noon usually costs an extra half-night, though staff will often store luggage free and let you use pool or gym facilities while you wait. If you land on an early international flight, message the property the day before - they're more flexible midweek than on weekends.

February is typically the cheapest month. It's peak wet season - humid, with afternoon storms - and domestic travellers head south to cooler cities. Rates drop 20-30% versus the July-September peak. Late January after Australia Day and early December before school holidays are also soft. Avoid any week overlapping a State of Origin match or major concert at the river precinct.

Brisbane locals visiting from interstate tend to pick the inner suburbs over the CBD - West End, New Farm, Paddington and Fortitude Valley all sit within 3km of the centre and have better food and bar scenes. The CBD empties after office hours. Serviced apartments are popular for stays over three nights, since they're often cheaper than hotels and include laundry.
