The Brooklyn
of Brussels is
Saint-Gilles.
Saint-Gilles is the coolest neighborhood in Brussels for natural wine bars, lazy Sunday markets on the Parvis, and sneaker shops along Chaussée de Charleroi.
Saint-Gilles is Art Nouveau facades crumbling next to natural wine bars. The Parvis square fills up on Sunday mornings with market stalls and coffee drinkers who won't move until 2pm. Chaussée de Charleroi runs the length of it, and walking it from top to bottom you'll pass half the best spots in Brussels without trying. People take their time here, and that's the whole point.
With 19,274 inhabitants per km², Saint-Gilles is the second most densely populated municipality in the Brussels-Capital Region, behind only Saint-Josse-ten-Noode's 23,234, which means neighbors, cafés and commerce fill nearly every block.
Other cool neighborhoods in Brussels.
Dansaert
Dansaert was Brussels's first cool shopping street and still has good concept stores, but it peaked a decade ago. Better for a wander than a destination.
Ixelles (Flagey/Châtelain)
Flagey and Châtelain are wine bars, weekend markets, and well-dressed thirty-somethings. The Place Flagey terrace scene on a warm evening is hard to beat.
Schaerbeek
Schaerbeek is the frontier. Turkish bakeries, massive Josaphat Park, gorgeous but crumbling townhouses. Give it three years and everyone will be writing about it.
Where to go in Saint-Gilles.
All three hotels are on or just off Chaussée de Charleroi - the spine of Saint-Gilles.
Brussels drinks lambic on the Parvis and eats moules-frites late.
Sunday morning: Parvis market until 1pm, then the Horta Museum on Rue Américaine.
Saint-Gilles, corner to corner.

The Parvis market vendors start packing up around 1pm on Sundays. Show up at noon for the best haggling on cheese and olives.
