Downtown Cairo is the crumbling, magnificent heart of the city. Khedival-era buildings with iron balconies and Art Deco facades line boulevards designed to echo Paris. The revolution started here and so did the city's independent art scene. Café Riche has been serving thick coffee since 1908, Townhouse Gallery runs experimental shows in a converted factory building, and the streets around Talaat Harb Square stay loud well past midnight.
