Hong Kong vs Singapore

Hong Kong · Asia

Hong Kong

is Sheung Wan / PoHo
Singapore · Asia

Singapore

is Tiong Bahru

Both neighborhoods reward slow walking, but the texture is different. Sheung Wan climbs. You're hauling yourself up steep lanes past dried abalone shops, smoke-blackened temples, and antique dealers wedged into narrow shopfronts, with espresso bars cut into the same hillside. Tiong Bahru is flat, low-rise, and quiet by comparison - 1930s walk-ups, a wet market that empties by lunch, bookshops and bakeries on Yong Siak Street. Hong Kong gives you density and friction. Singapore gives you breathing room and cleaner edges. Pick Sheung Wan if you want layers piled on top of each other. Pick Tiong Bahru if you want to actually sit down.

The Brooklyn of

Hong Kong is Sheung Wan / PoHo.

Sheung Wan slopes uphill from the harbor into a tangle of incense-filled temples, antique shops, and tiny wine bars along Hollywood Road. The PoHo area around Tai Ping Shan Street feels like a village inside a megacity. Dried seafood shops sit next to specialty coffee roasters. Old men do tai chi on the temple steps while the espresso crowd drifts in one by one, still half asleep.

Hollywood Road runs nearly 1km and packs in over 50 antique dealers and galleries, with Man Mo Temple - built in 1847 - still standing at the centre of it all.
The Brooklyn of

Singapore is Tiong Bahru.

Singapore's oldest public housing estate turned creative heartbeat. Art deco apartment blocks from the 1930s line low-rise streets where specialty coffee shops sit next to wet market hawker stalls. Yong Siak Street anchors the whole area. People linger here. The pace is slower than the rest of the city, and that's the whole point.

Nearly 80 hawker stalls pack the upper floor of Tiong Bahru Market, all inside one of Singapore's 20 conserved pre-war blocks - and most sell out before noon.

Common questions

Hong Kong or Singapore, answered.

Is Hong Kong or Singapore better for antique shopping?
Hong Kong wins for antiques. Sheung Wan's Hollywood Road is lined with antique dealers wedged into narrow shopfronts, sharing walls with dried seafood shops and wine bars. Singapore's Tiong Bahru leans toward bookshops, bakeries, and a wet market instead. If you want to hunt for old objects up steep lanes, go to Sheung Wan.
Is Hong Kong cheaper than Singapore?
No. Sheung Wan in Hong Kong and Tiong Bahru in Singapore both sit at the top end of the cost scale, so neither is the budget pick. The real difference is texture, not price. Hong Kong gives you density and friction on steep streets. Singapore gives you breathing room, flat low-rise calm, and slower mornings.
Which is cooler, Sheung Wan or Tiong Bahru?
Depends on what you want. Sheung Wan piles centuries-old temples, antique shops, and espresso bars on top of each other up a steep hillside - dense and full of friction. Tiong Bahru is flat, quiet, and low-rise, built around 1930s art deco walk-ups, a wet market, and bookshops. Pick Sheung Wan for layers, Tiong Bahru to actually sit down.
