The Brooklyn
of Dublin is
The Liberties.
The Liberties is the coolest neighborhood in Dublin for whiskey distilleries, Francis Street antique shops, and Saturday mornings at Newmarket square.
The Liberties is Dublin's oldest neighborhood and it feels like it. Cobblestones, whiskey distilleries, and antique shops on Francis Street that haven't changed in decades. But the coffee is third-wave, the restaurants punch well above their weight, and on Saturday mornings the Newmarket square hums with life. Old Dublin and new Dublin, arguing productively.
Every July since 1970, The Liberties has hosted Dublin's longest-running community festival, a tradition that reached its 56th edition in 2026.
Other cool neighborhoods in Dublin.
Portobello
Portobello sits along the Grand Canal where locals walk dogs and drink takeaway pints on the grass when the sun appears. Great restaurants, zero pretension.
Stoneybatter
Stoneybatter is all cozy pubs and corner shops slowly giving way to natural wine bars. Manor Street on a Sunday afternoon is perfect.
Rathmines
Rathmines has the big cinema, the best cheap eats on the southside, and a population that skews young and slightly broke. Honest and lived-in.
Where to go in The Liberties.
The Liberties puts you on cobblestones and close to the Teeling Whiskey Distillery on Newmarket Square, with the Liffey a short walk north and IMMA a short walk west.
Thomas Street and Francis Street anchor the dining scene here.
The Teeling Whiskey Distillery on Newmarket is the obvious stop, but do it properly - the single pot still at the end is worth the tour price.
