If your stay skips breakfast, the district has strong bakery and café culture from 8:00, so paying for hotel breakfast is rarely worth it.

Tipping is modest and optional. Leave 1-2 euros per bag for porters, 1-2 euros per night for housekeeping if you want to, and round up taxi fares. Concierge tips of 5-10 euros are reserved for genuine extra effort, like securing a hard reservation. No tipping at reception, and never expect service charges added to the bill.

The area along the canal and around the former cotton mill stays active into the evening. Standard city precautions apply around the tram stops late at night, but violent crime is rare and well below the German urban average.

Larger chain options sit closer to the main station, a 10-minute tram ride east. Book directly with the property when possible - small operators here often discount 5-10 percent off booking platform prices.

January and early February, outside of trade fair dates, are the lowest. Expect doubles in the district from 60-80 euros and four-star rooms under 110 euros. August is also soft because locals leave and no major fairs run. Avoid March (book fair), late May (Wave-Gotik-Treffen), and any week the exhibition grounds host a large industry event.

Standard check-in is 15:00, with most properties holding firm on that. Smaller guesthouses in the district will often store bags from 9:00 and let you in by 13:00 if the room is ready. Early check-in as a paid option (20-30 euros) is uncommon here; just ask politely on arrival and travel light enough to walk the canal while you wait.
