For May, June, and September, the busiest stretches, two to three weeks ahead is plenty. July and August are hot and tourist-heavy but bookings hold up late. For weekends tied to football matches or summer music festivals, lock in three to four weeks out. Winter, November to February excluding New Year, is flexible; a week ahead usually works. Small boutique places fill sooner, so book those earlier.

Smaller guesthouses and apartment-style stays in Anjos often skip breakfast or offer a basic continental setup with bread, cheese, and coffee. Larger hotels typically include it or offer it as a 10-15 euro add-on. Skip it. The neighborhood has strong independent cafes where a pastel de nata and a galão cost under 3 euros and the coffee is better.

Lisboetas hosting visiting family tend to put them in Arroios, Penha de França, or Campo de Ourique - residential, well-connected by metro, and free of tourist pricing. Anjos sits in this band. Avoid Alfama and Bairro Alto if you want a normal night's sleep; both run loud until 2am and the cobbled hills punish luggage.

Yes. Anjos is a working residential district with a strong South Asian and African community, busy at most hours, and statistically lower-crime than the central tourist zones. Standard pickpocket awareness on the metro applies. The streets immediately around the metro station are well-lit; some side streets quiet down after midnight but remain calm.

A handful, mostly small-scale: converted townhouses with 8-15 rooms, design-led apartment rentals, and a few guesthouses run by owners who live on site. You won't find international chains here - those cluster around Avenida da Liberdade and Parque das Nações. Expect 90-150 euros a night in shoulder season for something well-designed with a private bathroom.

Light. Tip 1-2 euros for a porter handling bags, 1-2 euros per night for housekeeping if you stayed several days, and round up taxi fares. Concierges who book something specific get 5-10 euros. Nothing is expected at check-in or check-out. Portuguese service staff are salaried and tipping is appreciated but never assumed.

Standard check-in is 15:00. Most Lisbon hotels will store luggage from morning onward at no charge, and many offer early check-in for 20-30 euros if a room is ready. Message ahead the day before - smaller Anjos guesthouses often accommodate 12:00 or 13:00 arrivals for free when occupancy is low.
