Northern Quarter The pick
Northern Quarter won on depth. Ancoats has the better dinner, Chorlton has the better Sunday, but neither has forty years of layers. NQ does. You can buy records, sneakers at KershKicks, and magazines at Unitom, drink a flat white at Idle Hands, then a cask pint at Port Street Beer House, all within five minutes on foot, all independent, none of it built by a developer's masterplan. Skof landing here, a serious restaurant choosing these streets over a shinier postcode, told you what the chefs already know. The others are still becoming something. NQ already is something, and has been long enough that it cannot be undone by one bad year.
