This site picks one neighborhood per city and defends it. In Naples the answer is Rione Sanità, and we will get to why. But Naples does not make shortlisting easy. Three other neighborhoods came close enough that we argued about them. Here they are, ranked, with the reasoning shown.

Rione Sanità The pick

Sanità won because it still runs its own transformation. The catacombs are managed by a neighborhood cooperative, not a ticketing conglomerate. The glove makers at Omega Gloves have been cutting leather here for generations. You drink at Antica Cantina Sepe next to people who were born three doors down, and the pizza at Concettina ai Tre Santi draws pilgrims without the block turning into a queue. Every other contender on this list changed because outsiders arrived. Sanità is changing because its own residents decided to. That distinction is the whole ballgame. Quartieri Spagnoli

A decade ago guidebooks told you to skip it. Now taxi drivers send you here for dinner. That reversal happened fast, powered by one-euro spritzes at Cammarota and a wave of university students renting rooms in the alleys. New fish vendors, new produce stalls, new bars, real momentum. It lost to Sanità on one count: the change here is tourist-led, and the spritz-crawl economy sets the tempo. If the students who moved in start opening things instead of just drinking things, this becomes the pick.

Piazza Bellini / Centro Storico

The bar scene here works like a circuit, not a destination. You drift from Port'Alba to San Domenico Maggiore to Via Mezzocannone, drink in hand, and the streets do half the entertaining. Bookshops pour wine after dark. Café Nea doubles as an art gallery. But the square stopped being a local secret years ago, a listening bar with a rotary mixer opened in 2025, and the Greek ruins at its center now collect bottles overnight. The intellectual energy is real. The underground edge already left the building.

Vomero

The hill neighborhood that never needed rescuing. The Antignano market sells fish to people who cook it that night, Osteria Donna Teresa changes its handful-of-tables menu daily, and the pubs off Piazza Vanvitelli fill with Neapolitans watching Napoli. Flora Central hides a garden bar inside Villa Floridiana. Vomero lost points for the same reason it works: nothing is at stake here. The one warning sign is Via Scarlatti, where photo menus and English-shouting waiters have started splitting the strip. Walk one block off it and Vomero is still entirely itself.
