For July and August, book three to four weeks ahead. For Carnaval in February or the Cannes Film Festival in May, when Nice fills with Cannes overflow, give yourself six to eight weeks. From September through April outside school holidays, one to two weeks is usually enough. Port-side rooms in summer go first, and weekday rates drop noticeably.

Most small port-area hotels quote room-only rates and add breakfast at 12 to 18 euros per person. Skip it. The neighborhood has bakeries opening around 7:00 and cafés around the harbor square serving espresso and a croissant for under 5 euros. You'll eat better and cheaper than the hotel buffet, and see the port wake up.

Service is included by law, so tipping is genuinely optional. For housekeeping, 1 to 2 euros per night left on the pillow is appreciated but not expected. Porters get 1 to 2 euros per bag. Concierges who book a hard-to-get table or fix a problem warrant 5 to 10 euros. No one will chase you down for more.

Yes. The port quarter is residential and quieter than the Old Town or the area behind the main station. Streets stay calm after midnight, with bar traffic concentrated on a few blocks. Standard precautions apply: watch bags on café terraces, and don't leave anything visible in parked cars. Solo travelers walking back from dinner report no issues.

A handful, mostly 15 to 30 rooms in converted 19th-century buildings facing the harbor or tucked on side streets behind it. Expect design-led interiors, small lobbies, and no pool or spa. Rates typically run 150 to 280 euros in shoulder season and climb past 350 in July and August. Book direct for better cancellation terms than the booking platforms.

November is the lowest month, with rates often 40 to 50 percent below August. January and early February before Carnaval are similar. March is still good value before Easter pushes prices up. Avoid the second half of May around the Cannes Film Festival and Monaco Grand Prix, when even Nice hotels 30 km away spike to peak rates.

Standard check-in is 15:00, occasionally 14:00 at larger properties. Early arrival is common given morning flights and the overnight train from Paris, and most hotels will store luggage from 8:00 onward at no charge. If you want a guaranteed early room, book the previous night. The port quarter is a 20-minute walk or 10-minute tram ride from the station.
