The Brooklyn
of Oslo is
Grünerløkka.
Old industrial buildings line the Akerselva river in Grünerløkka, coffee is treated like religion, and Thorvald Meyers gate fills up with stroller-pushing parents and tattooed bartenders in equal measure. Summers revolve around Birkelunden park and natural wine on Olaf Ryes plass. Winters mean candlelit wine bars and very strong espresso.
Thorvald Meyers gate packs more than 30 independent bars, cafes, and restaurants into a single walkable street - more specialty coffee per block than almost anywhere else in Scandinavia.
Other cool neighborhoods in Oslo.
Tøyen
Tøyen is grittier and more interesting every year. The Munch Museum landed here, and the food scene around Tøyengata is quietly excellent. Rough around the edges, more real.
Vulkan
Vulkan sits right on the Akerselva river in a converted industrial complex. Mathallen food hall is the anchor. It feels designed, but the riverside walk earns it.
Grønland
Grønland is Oslo's most multicultural strip. Cheap eats, halal butchers, and Pakistani restaurants that have been here for decades. Also some of the city's best dive bars.
Where to go in Grünerløkka.
Grünerløkka hotels keep you walking distance from Tim Wendelboe on Grüners gate and everything spilling onto Thorvald Meyers gate.
Coffee in Grünerløkka is treated like a religion - Tim Wendelboe on Grüners gate is the pilgrimage stop, Supreme Roastworks on Thorvald Meyers gate is for the obsessives.
The Sunday flea market at Birkelunden runs May through October - vintage Scandinavian ceramics move fast, so get there before 11am.
