Book 3 to 4 weeks ahead for June through September, Portland's dry season and peak tourism window. Rose Festival in early June and the summer beer and music festivals drive rates up, so push to 5 or 6 weeks for those dates. October through April is easier, with 1 to 2 weeks usually fine. Book a little sooner for small east side boutiques during Rip City home games.

Alberta itself is mostly residential bungalows, so lodging is short-term rentals and small guesthouses rather than hotels. For boutique properties, look slightly south toward the Lloyd District, the central east side near Burnside, or across the river in the Pearl. All are 10-15 minutes by car or bus from Alberta's main strip on NE Alberta Street.

Alberta is a residential neighborhood and generally safe day and night, with foot traffic along the main commercial strip until restaurants close around 22:00. Side streets are quiet and dark - use normal city awareness. Car break-ins are the most common issue across Portland, so don't leave anything visible in a parked vehicle, including charging cables.

Tip housekeeping 3-5 dollars per night, left daily rather than at checkout since staff rotate. Bellhops get 1-2 dollars per bag. Valet parking is 2-5 dollars when the car is returned. Hotel bar and restaurant tips follow standard US rules - 18-20 percent on the pre-tax total. Concierge tips are discretionary, usually 5-20 dollars for substantial help.

January and February are the cheapest, with rates often 30-40 percent below summer peaks. The trade-off is constant rain and short daylight. November and early December are also affordable outside of Thanksgiving week. If you want decent weather at lower prices, late April and early May hit a sweet spot before the summer surge starts in mid-June.

When Portlanders host visiting family, they usually point them to the central east side or Northwest 23rd rather than downtown, which has thinned out post-pandemic. For Alberta specifically, locals recommend short-term rentals in the surrounding NE neighborhoods - Concordia, Vernon, King - where you get a porch, a yard, and a 10-minute walk to the Alberta Street restaurants.

Standard check-in is 15:00 or 16:00 across Portland properties. Most front desks will store luggage from late morning if your room isn't ready. Early check-in before noon usually requires paying for the previous night. If you're arriving on a morning flight from the east coast or overseas, ask about a half-day rate rather than assuming a free early room.
