The shortlist

The coolest neighborhoods in Ankara.

This site picks one neighborhood per city and stands behind it. In Ankara the answer is Kavaklıdere, and it wasn't a coin flip. Four neighborhoods made the shortlist. Here they are, ranked, with the reasons the other three came up short.

01

Kavaklıdere The pick

Kavaklıdere won because it does everything the runners-up do, in one grid, without stopping. Kızılay has the bars but not the wine list. Ayrancı has the record crowd one Sunday a month; Kavaklıdere has KV Records open all week, plus Shades for the crate-diggers and Eskimiyo Vintage for the secondhand racks. Hamamönü shuts down when the tea gardens close. Here you can start at Sloth Coffee Shop, eat shrimp köfte at Kuytu Meze & Balık, work through 240 labels at Hayyami Şarap Evi, and finish at Zula Bar or 21 Bar without crossing a main road. No other Ankara neighborhood holds a full day. That clinched it.

02

Kızılay

The loudest second place on this site. Sakarya Caddesi is called Barlar Sokağı for a reason, beer gardens full of Ankara University students, arthouse cinemas, simit sellers working the civil servant crowd. The pedestrian streets, Karanfil and Yüksel, run on bookstores and coffee. Pasaj Karanfil packs record shops and antique stalls into one old arcade, and that arcade culture is the thing to watch: the malls are squeezing the pasajlar citywide. If Kızılay's arcades hold their ground, this ranking gets harder. Right now it's cheaper and younger than Kavaklıdere, but it can't match the depth.

03

Ayrancı

Quiet all week, then the first Sunday hits and the Antika Pazarı on Dikmen Caddesi pulls sellers from across Turkey and a few European cities. Typewriters, cassettes, copper, cameras. Locals on Ekşi Sözlük grumble that most of it is old rather than antique, which is fair and also beside the point. The corridor's fixed asset is Galeri Siyah Beyaz at the Kavaklıdere end, forty years running, bar downstairs, gallery upstairs. The market is already adding extra Sundays. If it goes weekly and the gallery route thickens, Ayrancı becomes a real threat.

04

Hamamönü

Across town in Altındağ, near Ulus and the castle, and running on the opposite schedule. Restored Ottoman houses hold cafes, craft shops and cultural houses that mostly work nine to five. The streets are genuinely beautiful. The problem is the drift: recent visitors keep reporting mass-produced souvenirs where the craft used to be, and loud music where the quiet used to be. A daytime neighborhood can be cool. A neighborhood curated for tour groups cannot. Hamamönü made the shortlist on its bones. What it does with them decides whether it climbs.

No juries, no sponsors. How we pick explains the rules; Kavaklıdere is where they landed.
