This site exists to give one answer per city, and for Beijing the answer is Gulou. But the shortlist deserves daylight. Beijing is enormous, and only a few neighborhoods have real gravity of their own. Here is the ranking, the pick first, then the one that pushed it hardest.

Gulou The pick

Gulou won because it works without a plan. You can eat dumplings at Zhang Mama, dig through racks at Mega Vintage, flip vinyl at Indie Music, sit down at Café Zarah, and end the night with a pint at The Factory, all on foot, all in one loop. Nobody built this for visitors. People live above the shops, and the bars close when the street does. The other contenders in Beijing ask you to commit to a taxi and a category. Gulou asks nothing. The coolest neighborhood is the one where a wasted afternoon is impossible. Gulou manages it daily.

798 / Caochangdi

The serious art answer. Nearly 200 galleries in the Dashanzi factory zone, with UCCA, Pace, Long March Space, and Beijing Commune as the anchors, plus the late-September 798 Art Festival. It came close because nowhere else in China concentrates this much contemporary work. It lost because it is a destination, not a neighborhood: you taxi in from Wangjing South, look, and leave. And Caochangdi, the rawer studio village next door, has faced demolition crews since 2018. Galerie Urs Meile already retreated to 798. Go now. Parts of it may not survive the next planning cycle.
