Kreuzberg's afternoons run on Markthalle Neun's Street Food Thursday and a slow walk through the political stencils off Oranienstraße, or a loop through the roughly 50 stalls at Marheineke Markthalle, rebuilt and glassed over in 2007. By midnight you're at SO36, where the floor is still sticky and the lineup still swings from hardcore matinees to queer dance parties.

Opened in 1892 as Markthalle XI with 290 four-square-metre stands, fed 15,000 Berliners a day as a people's kitchen after the First World War, was flattened in the Second and rebuilt from 1952. The 2007 rebuild glazed the eastern end and cut it to around 50 stalls: cheese, whole fish, Greek and Arab delicacies, Uckermark produce, a row of lunch counters. Closed Sundays.

Is Kreuzberg walkable?
Yes. Kreuzberg is flat and compact, roughly 30 minutes on foot from end to end. The eastern half around the canal is dense with bars, bookshops, and Turkish bakeries. The western half near the old Wall route feels quieter and more residential. Sidewalks are wide. Watch for the red-painted bike lanes - stepping into one will get you a sharp bell.
How do I get to Kreuzberg from the airport?
From BER, take the Airport Express (FEX) or an S-Bahn into the city, then transfer to the U1 or U8. Total time is around 45-60 minutes. A single AB ticket covers the trip and costs roughly 4 euros. Taxis run 50-60 euros. Welcome cards include airport transfer plus unlimited transit, which pays off after two days.
Does Uber work in Berlin?
It does, but in Germany Uber mainly dispatches licensed taxis, so the price tracks the regulated meter rather than undercutting it. Most locals use Free Now, which works the same way and usually has more cars, with Bolt as a backup. Either is fine from the airport or at 3am in Kreuzberg, and the cream taxis at ranks are just as quick if no app car turns up.
