The Brooklyn
of Bologna is
Bolognina.
Bolognina is the coolest neighborhood in Bologna for Eritrean groceries, salumerie tagliatelle at Trattoria di Via Serra, and record digging at Disco d'Oro.
Bolognina sits just north of the train station, a working-class quarter where Eritrean grocers share blocks with old-school salumerie. Via Luigi Serra runs straight through it. The porticoes are rougher here, the rent is lower, and the food is honestly better than half the centro storico. This is where Bologna actually lives now.
Since opening in 2019, DumBO, the grassroots cultural district on Bolognina's former Ravone freight yard, has organised more than 700 events, turning disused rail sheds into a working engine of neighborhood life.
Other cool neighborhoods in Bologna.
Ghetto Ebraico
Bologna's former Jewish quarter is a tight maze of medieval streets around Via dell'Inferno. Tiny wine bars, impossibly old buildings, and a quiet intensity that the tourist crowds somehow miss.
Via del Pratello
The city's late-night artery. Every other door is a bar, the walls are covered in street art, and nobody goes home before 2am. Loud, cheap, young.
Manifattura delle Arti
The old manufacturing district turned cultural corridor. MAMbo is the anchor, but the real draw is wandering the converted warehouses along the canal at golden hour.
Where to go in Bolognina.
Via Luigi Serra is the main artery of Bolognina, and a hotel on this street puts you in the middle of it - close to the city's best trattorias and a short walk north of the train station.
Bolognina lives on tagliatelle al ragù and Thursday aperitivo.
Thursday evenings the whole of Via Serra becomes an outdoor aperitivo strip.
