During Cosmoprof in March, the April children's book fair, and other trade fairs at the exhibition grounds, book 4 to 6 weeks ahead since those weeks genuinely fill central rooms and lift prices. Outside fair dates, 2 to 3 weeks covers spring and autumn. July and August are easier, often a week or so. December needs lead time only around the holidays.

Most mid-range hotels and B&Bs in Bolognina include a basic Italian breakfast: cornetto, yogurt, fruit, espresso, sometimes cured meats and cheese. Budget guesthouses often skip it or charge 5-8 euros extra. Check before booking. You're better off walking to a neighborhood bar for a 1.50 euro cappuccino and pastry standing at the counter.

Tipping at Italian hotels is minimal. Leave 1-2 euros for the porter if they carry bags, and a couple of euros per night for housekeeping if you want, left on the pillow. Concierge tips of 5-10 euros apply only for genuine favors like hard restaurant reservations. Most staff are salaried and don't expect tips.

Bolognina is safe for visitors. It's a working-class, multi-ethnic district north of the train station with normal city awareness needed at night around the station underpasses. The interior streets are quiet and residential. Solo travelers and women report no particular issues. Petty theft risk is roughly the same as central Bologna - watch bags on buses.

Bolognina has a small but growing set of design-led guesthouses and apartment hotels, mostly in converted industrial buildings and former workshops. Expect 80-140 euros per night for a double, well below comparable rooms inside the medieval center. Larger branded boutique hotels remain concentrated south of the station; Bolognina's offerings are independent and small-scale.

Locals hosting visiting family typically point them to Bolognina, the Cirenaica area east of the center, or the streets around Via Mazzini for better value than the historic center. Students and younger visitors gravitate to the university quarter. Bolognina specifically appeals to anyone who wants tram and train access plus actual neighborhood life rather than tourist-facing streets.

Standard check-in is 14:00 or 15:00 across most Bologna hotels. Smaller B&Bs and apartments in Bolognina often require you to message ahead with arrival time since there's no 24-hour reception. Early arrival usually means leaving bags at the property and coming back later. The train station has luggage storage if your host can't accommodate.
