Book 2-3 weeks ahead for May, June, and September, the peak wine tourism months when harvest tours and trade events fill rooms. Vinexpo years (odd-numbered, usually June) are the real exception: book a month or more out. July and August are quieter than you'd expect since locals leave for the coast. Winter bookings 1-2 weeks ahead are fine.

Most mid-range and boutique hotels in the area charge breakfast separately, typically 15-25 euros per person. Skip it. The neighborhood has strong independent bakeries and cafes within a five-minute walk where a coffee and viennoiserie runs 4-6 euros. Sunday mornings the riverside market sets up nearby with oysters, white wine, and pastries.

Service is included by law, so tipping is optional and modest. Leave 1-2 euros for housekeeping per night if you wish, 1-2 euros for a porter handling bags, and 5 euros for a concierge who books something tricky. Round up taxi fares. Nobody expects American-style percentages, and staff won't chase you for tips.

Yes. The neighborhood is residential, walkable at all hours, and well-lit along the quays and main streets. Pickpocketing on the tram (especially line C, which runs through Les Chartrons) is the main concern - keep phones and wallets out of back pockets. The area north toward the train station gets quieter and less polished after dark but isn't dangerous.

Yes, several. The neighborhood's 18th-century wine merchant houses have been converted into small hotels with 10-30 rooms, often with courtyards, exposed limestone, and original parquet. Expect 150-280 euros a night in season. Larger chain hotels cluster closer to the train station and the main shopping streets south of here, not in Les Chartrons itself.

January and February are cheapest, with rates 30-40% below June peaks. Weather is grey and damp but the city stays active, restaurants take reservations easily, and wine tastings are unhurried. August is also softer than expected since the French leisure travel shifts to the coast and Bordelais themselves leave town. Avoid early June if Vinexpo is running.

Standard check-in is 15:00, though most properties will store luggage from late morning onward. Early check-in before noon is rarely free; expect to pay roughly half a night's rate. If you arrive on the morning TGV from Paris, drop bags, walk the quays, and have lunch before circling back. Late checkout until 12:00 is often granted free on request.
