For July and August, when Sicilian beach traffic peaks and Etna hiking is busiest, book three to four weeks ahead. February's Sant'Agata festival fills central rooms about two weeks out. Shoulder seasons (April-June, September-October) have wide availability one to two weeks ahead. Winter is open booking, often with same-week openings on central properties near the historic center.

The northern half around the main shopping streets is fine day and night. The older southern pocket, long associated with sex work, has gentrified unevenly - some blocks host bars and galleries, others remain quiet and run-down after dark. Stick to well-lit streets at night, keep valuables out of sight, and you'll have no real issues. Petty theft, not violence, is the concern.

Most three- and four-star hotels include a buffet breakfast with cornetti, fresh ricotta, granita in summer, cured meats, and espresso. B&Bs typically offer a smaller continental spread or a voucher for a nearby bar. Apartment rentals rarely include anything. If breakfast isn't included, the Sicilian alternative - granita with brioche at a corner bar - runs about 4-5 euros.

Tipping is modest and optional. Leave 1-2 euros for housekeeping per night if you stayed multiple days, and 1-2 euros for a porter handling bags. Concierges who book something special might get 5-10 euros. Don't tip on top of a coperto or service charge already on a restaurant bill. Cash in euros, not foreign currency.

Catanesi don't stay in Catania, but visiting Sicilians from Palermo or Messina favor the streets around the university and the restored lava-stone palazzi near the cathedral square. Business travelers cluster near the central station. Families visiting from the mainland often pick the seafront stretch toward Ognina for parking and sea access, a 10-minute drive from the historic center.

Yes, a handful of small properties have opened in restored 19th-century buildings, typically 8-15 rooms with design-led interiors, rooftop terraces facing Etna, and in-house bars. Expect 120-200 euros a night in shoulder season, more in August. Several occupy former palazzi with original tile floors and high ceilings. Book directly when possible - some don't list on the big aggregators.

Standard check-in is 14:00 or 15:00. Most hotels will store luggage from morning onward at no charge, freeing you to walk the fish market or grab granita. Early check-in before noon is rarely guaranteed but often possible if you message ahead, especially in low season. Small B&Bs may require a specific arrival window since they aren't staffed 24 hours.
