Boston

is Jamaica Plain

East Austin runs on cars, heat, and late nights: you drive to the taco truck, drink natural wine in the next lot over, and the show doesn't start until eleven. Jamaica Plain runs on the Orange Line and a walk along Centre Street, with the 281-acre Arboretum free and open every day if you need air. Both mix Latin roots with newer money, but East Austin still feels mid-change, the lots half built out, while JP settled into itself a while ago. Austin's Saturday is corn tortillas and espresso; JP's is a pond loop then ninety-nine people packed into the Midway Café. Pick East Austin if you want energy and heat, JP if you want to leave the car behind.

The Brooklyn of

Austin is East Austin.

East Austin is where the taco trucks share parking lots with natural wine bars and nobody thinks twice about it. E 6th Street east of I-35 is a different planet from the Dirty Sixth tourist chaos. Saturday mornings smell like corn tortillas and fresh espresso. The creative energy here isn't for show, it's just how people live.

In East Austin, the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center fills a 36,000-square-foot facility with four permanent exhibit galleries, a theater, a dance studio, and classrooms.
The Brooklyn of

Boston is Jamaica Plain.

Jamaica Plain stretches along Centre Street from Hyde Square, the state-designated Latin Cultural Quarter, down to the pond Olmsted folded into the Emerald Necklace. Tuesday afternoon means construction workers and doctors at the same café counter, then trivia night at the Brendan Behan Pub. Saturday night, ninety-nine people squeeze into the Midway Café on Washington Street for the band, cash in hand. You won't find many chain stores here.

The Arnold Arboretum covers 281 acres of Jamaica Plain, paths laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted, and the gates stay open every day of the year at no charge.

The verdict

It depends on the weekend.

Austin Live music that goes late and street food you eat standing up, with the creative scene still being built rather than preserved.

Boston Walkability, 281 free acres of Olmsted parkland, and a neighborhood that mixes doctors, construction workers, and a Latin Cultural Quarter without trying.
