Austin

is East Austin

East Atlanta Village is small enough that a whole night happens on two streets: dinner on Glenwood, a show at The EARL, home on foot. It runs on its own steam, with the Strut still volunteer-run after more than twenty-five years and murals filling the gaps between bars. East Austin is bigger and busier in daylight, its parking lots doing double duty for taco trucks and wine bars. Mornings matter there in a way they don't in East Atlanta, which mostly wakes up after dark. Pick Atlanta if your trip is built around live music and late nights in one tight core. Pick Austin if you want to eat and drink your way through a full day.

The Brooklyn of

Atlanta is East Atlanta Village.

East Atlanta Village sits southeast of downtown, its commercial strip running along Flat Shoals and Glenwood Avenues. On a Tuesday afternoon the sidewalks are quiet and The EARL is setting up for a mid-week show. Saturday runs dinner at Banshee or Argosy on Glenwood, then live music at The EARL, all inside the neighborhood core. Living Walls murals cover the brick in between.

The East Atlanta Strut has run every September since 1998 without missing a year, a volunteer-run festival that sends its proceeds to neighborhood nonprofits.
The Brooklyn of

Austin is East Austin.

East Austin is where the taco trucks share parking lots with natural wine bars and nobody thinks twice about it. E 6th Street east of I-35 is a different planet from the Dirty Sixth tourist chaos. Saturday mornings smell like corn tortillas and fresh espresso. The creative energy here isn't for show, it's just how people live.

In East Austin, the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center fills a 36,000-square-foot facility with four permanent exhibit galleries, a theater, a dance studio, and classrooms.
