Philadelphia

is Fishtown

Jamaica Plain has been settled into itself for decades: the arboretum, the pond, a Latin Cultural Quarter along Centre Street, a pub trivia crowd that skews mixed-age and queer. Fishtown is still mid-change, and you feel it on Frankford Avenue, where a natural wine shop shares a wall with a bar that has poured for the same regulars since the seventies. JP is where you walk an hour under Olmsted's trees and end the night at a cash-only show. Fishtown is where you eat too much, drink well, and stay out later than planned. Boston's version is calmer and more residential. Philly's is louder, younger, and better after dark.

The Brooklyn of

Boston is Jamaica Plain.

Jamaica Plain stretches along Centre Street from Hyde Square, the state-designated Latin Cultural Quarter, down to the pond Olmsted folded into the Emerald Necklace. Tuesday afternoon means construction workers and doctors at the same café counter, then trivia night at the Brendan Behan Pub. Saturday night, ninety-nine people squeeze into the Midway Café on Washington Street for the band, cash in hand. You won't find many chain stores here.

The Arnold Arboretum covers 281 acres of Jamaica Plain, paths laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted, and the gates stay open every day of the year at no charge.
The Brooklyn of

Philadelphia is Fishtown.

Fishtown is a former working-class neighborhood where the old Irish bars never left but the natural wine shops moved in next door. Everything runs along Frankford Avenue, a long, walkable strip where you'll pass a Lebanese restaurant that looks like a palace, a record shop, and three coffee roasters before lunch. It still feels like Philly here. People are loud and the food is serious.

On May 2, 2026, the 4th annual Fishtown Music & Arts Festival packed 7 stages, 100+ vendors, and 25+ performers onto Fishtown's streets under the El at Front & Palmer.

The verdict

It depends on the weekend.

Boston Green space and a neighborhood that already knows what it is, with free acres of arboretum and a genuinely mixed, unhurried crowd.

Philadelphia Eating and drinking along one long strip, with serious restaurants, three coffee roasters, natural wine, and a bigger live-music scene.
