The Brooklyn
of Lima is
Barranco.
Barranco is the coolest neighborhood in Lima for sidewalk anticuchos, Sáenz Peña bars open until 3am, and craft shops like Dédalo.
Barranco is crumbling colonial mansions repainted in pastels, street murals on every corner, and nobody eating dinner before 9pm. The cliffs drop to the Pacific and the bars on Sáenz Peña don't quiet down until 3am. It smells like anticuchos and sea salt. Lima's creative heart lives here, and it knows it.
Barranco District covers just 3.33 km² (1.29 sq mi), one of Lima's smallest districts, small enough that its murals, cliffside walkways, and old casonas fit within a single afternoon's walk.
Other cool neighborhoods in Lima.
Miraflores
Miraflores is the neighborhood that plays it safe and knows it. Ocean-view parks, reliable ceviche spots along Kennedy Park, and the shopping you'd expect. Walkable, well-lit, a little predictable.
Callao Monumental
Callao Monumental is a port district turned open-air gallery. Massive murals cover warehouses. It feels raw and unfinished. Go with a group.
Pueblo Libre
Pueblo Libre is where Lima remembers itself. Two excellent museums, quiet plazas, and tavernas that haven't changed their menus in decades. Wonderfully unhurried.
Where to go in Barranco.
Barranco's best hotels are in restored Belle Époque mansions on or near Jirón Sáenz Peña.
