Peckham The pick

Peckham won because it sets the direction the others follow. Peckham Cellars just opened a second site in Camberwell, which tells you which way the influence flows. The food here goes deep, not wide: Artusi and Ganapati for the sit-down, Form SE15 for the new wave, Nola Coffee before any of it opens. What tips it: the mix still hasn't settled. The grocers and the wine bars share Rye Lane without one absorbing the other, and that tension does the work. Dalston had this a decade ago. Camberwell will have it in five years. Peckham has it now.

Dalston

Dalston is the prototype, and it is not done. Kingsland Road just got a second wind: The Divine on the old Birthdays site, Warehaus flipping from production space to bar, Bar Lotus for the cocktail crowd. Cafe OTO and Dalston Superstore never left. The problem is Ridley Road, where traders got knocked down to 12-month leases in 2025 and the Save Ridley Road campaign is fighting rent hikes stall by stall. If the market survives intact and Ashwin Street's secured studios anchor the culture, Dalston takes the top spot back.

Camberwell

Camberwell is Peckham with the volume turned down and no Tube stop. Church Street carries it: FM Mangal for the grill, Stormbird and Hermit's Cave for cask ale, Theo's around the corner on Grove Lane. The art college feeds it students who never leave. The gastropub wave arrived in 2025, the Kerfield Arms, The Bear, a million spent on the Sun of Camberwell, so the clock is now running. Come back in three years. If the pubs and the painters are still coexisting, this is the pick.

Walthamstow

Walthamstow built the Blackhorse Beer Mile out of industrial units: Signature Brew, Wild Card, Exale, Pretty Decent, plus a winery, all within walking distance. The High Street market runs longer than any other outdoor market in Europe. So why third? Because the neighborhood got its coronation. A national paper called it London's best place to live in 2025, and when Gail's tried to open near Orford Road, the fight that broke out was between two kinds of comfortable. One brewery bar already closed over rent. Walthamstow is desirable now. That is a different thing from cool.
