The Brooklyn
of Malmö is
Möllevången.
Möllevången is the coolest neighborhood in Malmö for morning falafel-smoke market stalls, sidewalk cans over five languages, and record-digging at Rundgång.
Locals just call it Möllan. The square fills up with produce stalls and falafel smoke every morning. At night the bars spill onto sidewalks and people stand around in clusters with open cans, talking over each other in five languages. Möllevången is cheap, loud, multilingual, and the best eating in southern Sweden happens on these few blocks.
Laid out between 1904 and 1906 as the centrepiece of Malmö's workers' district, Möllevångstorget still runs its daily fruit-and-vegetable market beside Axel Ebbe's 1931 bronze Arbetets ära, over 120 years on.
Other cool neighborhoods in Malmö.
Davidshall
Davidshall is the calmer, more deliberate block. Wine bars, independent shops, and an unhurried pace. Walk here when Möllan is too much.
Folkets Park / Södervärn
Folkets Park is Malmö's people's park, literally. Free entry, summer stages, and Södervärn's kebab joints right next door. Very real, very local.
Västra Hamnen
Västra Hamnen is all waterfront architecture and sea breezes. The Turning Torso looms overhead. Good for a Sunday walk, less good for a cheap beer.
Where to go in Möllevången.
The More Hotel Mazetti puts you in a former chocolate factory on Norra Skolgatan, two minutes from Möllevångstorget.
Möllevångstorget itself is where you start - cheap falafel from the square's south-side stalls for lunch, then Farina's focaccia in the morning if you get there before it sells out.
Möllevångstorget market runs every morning - produce stalls, falafel smoke, half of Malmö's counterculture doing its weekly shop.

The falafel at Möllan torget is famously cheap, but skip the tourist lines and hit the stands on the square's south side. Then walk Bergsgatan south for the bars nobody's blogging about yet.
