Book 6-8 weeks ahead for May through August, when Swedes take summer holidays and Copenhagen visitors spill across the bridge. Weekends during the football season and major conference dates fill fast. Outside summer, two to three weeks ahead is usually fine. December tends to be quietest apart from the few days around Christmas markets.

Most Swedish hotels include a buffet breakfast in the room rate, and it's typically worth taking. Expect filmjölk, rye bread, cheese, cured meats, boiled eggs, pickled herring, and strong coffee. Budget chains sometimes charge 100-150 SEK extra. Always confirm at booking, since some newer design hotels and hostels in the area price breakfast separately.

Tipping isn't expected at Swedish hotels - staff earn a proper wage and service is in the rate. A porter who carries heavy bags or a concierge who arranges something tricky might get 20-50 SEK, but it's a gesture, not a rule, and housekeeping is rarely tipped. Restaurants are the exception: a sit-down dinner usually gets around 10 percent.

Malmö residents hosting visitors usually point them toward the streets just north of the central station or the canal-ring area, both walkable to everything. Möllevången itself draws younger guests wanting nightlife and cheap eats on the doorstep. Families and business travelers tend toward the harbor-front district, which is quieter but a longer walk back from evening drinks.

Möllevången is safe by most standards, including late at night. The neighborhood has a working-class, multicultural character that occasionally gets exaggerated in Swedish tabloids. Standard city precautions apply: watch your bag at the square on market days, and stick to lit streets after 2am. Solo travelers, including women, generally report no issues walking back from bars.

Möllevången itself is mostly residential with hostels and a few small guesthouses rather than full boutique hotels. For design-led independents you'll look just outside the neighborhood, toward the canal or the western harbor. Staying inside Möllevången means apartment rentals or budget rooms; staying ten minutes north gets you boutique options while keeping the neighborhood walkable for dinner and drinks.

Standard check-in is 15:00 across Swedish hotels, with checkout at 11:00 or 12:00. Most properties will store luggage from morning onward at no charge, so drop bags and head out. Early check-in before noon is rarely guaranteed but sometimes possible if you ask politely at booking, occasionally for a fee of 200-400 SEK.
