in and near Palermo, Montevideo.

Book three to four weeks ahead for January and February, when Argentine and Brazilian visitors fill the city and Carnival runs for 40 days, the longest in the world. Easter week also tightens supply, so give it two to three weeks. Outside summer, one to two weeks is plenty. Rates drop sharply from May through September, with weekday availability easy to find.

Most mid-range and boutique stays in Palermo include breakfast in the rate. Expect medialunas, fresh bread, dulce de leche, scrambled eggs, fruit, and strong coffee. Budget aparthotels and apartment rentals typically don't. If breakfast matters, confirm at booking, since some properties charge it separately at around 8-12 USD per person.

Tipping is appreciated but low-key in Uruguay. Leave 50-100 pesos per night for housekeeping, similar for porters per bag, and round up taxi fares. Restaurants often add a cubierto (cover charge) but not service, so 10 percent is standard for good service. US dollars are accepted at most hotels but pesos are preferred by staff.

Palermo is one of the safer central neighborhoods, especially the blocks closer to the rambla and Parque Rodó. Walking by day is relaxed. At night, stick to well-lit main streets and use Uber or a radio taxi for longer distances. Standard precautions apply: don't flash phones on quiet corners, and keep an eye on bags at sidewalk cafes.

Palermo itself has no boutique hotel that clears our bar, so our three picks sit just outside it: Bit Design Hotel and Own Montevideo Hotel in Punta Carretas, and Sur Hotel in neighboring Barrio Sur. Each is a deliberate nearby exception; the guide does not add hotels just to fill the list.

June through August is cheapest, with rates often 40-50 percent below January. Winter is mild (8-15C) but damp and grey, and many beach-facing places run skeleton service. July school holidays bring a short bump. For the best balance of price and weather, target late September to mid-November or mid-March to May.

Standard check-in is 14:00 or 15:00, checkout 10:00 or 11:00. Early arrival from the airport or the Buquebus ferry from Buenos Aires is common, and most hotels will store luggage and let you use common areas. Guaranteed early check-in usually costs half a night. Message the property the day before if you're landing at dawn.
