The coolest neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro.

This site gives one answer per city, and for Rio de Janeiro the answer is Botafogo. But the shortlist was not easy. Rio has hillside neighborhoods, party districts, and a beach that runs its own economy. Here is who made the cut, and why they came second.

Botafogo The pick

Botafogo won because it is still in motion. Santa Teresa settled into its role years ago. Ipanema finished gentrifying and priced out the argument. Lapa empties out by sunrise. Botafogo is the only contender where the interesting things opened recently and the people who go to them also sleep there. You can drink at Quartinho Bar on a Tuesday, buy a book at Blooks Livraria on a Wednesday, and book Lasai for an anniversary, all without leaving the neighborhood or seeing a tour group. Ambition plus actual residents is the rare pairing. Botafogo has it. Nowhere else in Rio does right now.

Santa Teresa

Locals just call it Santa. Everything radiates from Largo dos Guimarães: the bars, the weekend musicians, the flea market where Samba dos Guimarães runs deep into Sunday morning. Bar do Gomes and Bar do Mineiro are the anchors, and Parque das Ruínas still hangs art inside a gutted mansion with the best view of the bay. The problem is that Santa Teresa already happened. It is curated for visitors now, and the tram is a coin flip. If the tourist tide ever recedes, it jumps back to first.

Lapa

Rua do Lavradio is the oldest street in Rio and still its best strip, with Rio Scenarium stacking three floors of antiques over the dance floor and Carioca da Gema running samba nightly. The streets close to cars Friday through Sunday and the whole district becomes one show. But Lapa is a place you go, not a place you live, and that caps it. Watch Rua do Senado next door, where Restaurante Lilia and Labuta Bar are pulling a younger crowd around Armazém Senado. If that daytime energy bleeds back in, the math changes.

Ipanema

The beach argument is over and Ipanema won it. Posto 9 stays the Sunday gathering point, the Feira Hippie fills Praça General Osório every week, and Rua Farme de Amoedo remains the street everyone navigates by. It is also the safest stretch of the South Zone. That is the issue. Square meters run around R$25,000, double the city average, and prices are still climbing. The gentrification here is complete, not in progress. Ipanema is a finished product. This list rewards the ones still being written.
