The Mission District The pick
The Mission wins on range. Every runner-up here does one thing well. Hayes Valley does polish, Glen Park does quiet, Dogpatch does daytime. The Mission does all of it at once and keeps going after midnight. You can start the morning at Grand Coffee, spend the afternoon in Dog Eared Books or Medicine for Nightmares, drink at 20 Spot, and still make a late seating at Lazy Bear. No other neighborhood in the city runs that deep from breakfast to last call. It's also the only one on this list where the culture was built by the people who live there, over decades, not delivered by a leasing agent.
