The coolest neighborhoods in San Sebastián.

This site exists to give one answer per city, and in San Sebastián that answer is Gros. But the shortlist was closer than usual. Four neighborhoods made the cut. One of them is coming for the crown, one refuses to compete, and one already lost to its own popularity. Here's how they rank.

Gros The pick

Gros won because it does what the others can't: it holds locals and visitors in the same room without either group ruining it. Parte Vieja lost its residents to the crowds. Amara has the residents but nothing pulling you across town. Egia has the momentum but not the full stack yet. Gros has all of it right now. A gallery like Arteuparte two blocks from a beer hall like Mala Gissona. M32 Concept Store selling three-sizes-per-piece menswear a short walk from Casa 887 and ERRE. You can build a whole day here without repeating a category. That range, on that little ground, made it unbeatable.

Egia

Egia is the one gaining on Gros. Tabakalera, the old tobacco factory turned culture center, anchors it. Bukowski on Egia Kalea is the bar every local can name. Dabadaba runs the concerts, Gazteszena backs it up, and Friday pintxopote still costs two euros for a drink and a bite. Property jumped 12.4 percent in a year, which means the market has noticed too. Darker, more music, less brunch. If the food scene catches up to the culture, this page gets rewritten.

Amara

Amara doesn't want to be cool, which is exactly why it made the list. The bars along Isabel II and Balleneros serve their regulars, Plaza Easo does the social work, and Txirrita will feed you tripe and cheeks without ceremony. Pintxopote runs Wednesdays here, a full two days ahead of Egia. There are still cider houses. It will never be the pick because it isn't trying to be anything. Come here when you want San Sebastián with the volume turned down.

Parte Vieja

The pintxos are real. La Cepa has claimed the Gilda since the 1940s, Goiz Argi has been griddling prawn skewers since 1959, and Ganbara's wild mushrooms deserve their reputation. The problem is everything around them. Residents marched through these streets in 2024 demanding the city degrow tourism, and the mayor has already moved to block new tourist apartments. When the neighborhood's own people are protesting the visitors, cool has left the building. Eat here. Just know you're at the buffet, not the party.
