For St. Patrick's Day itself, book 2-3 months ahead, since Savannah's celebration is one of the largest in the country. Otherwise three to four weeks covers March and April azalea season and the October and November wedding traffic. Summer is easier but humid, so a week or two works. For Starland, options run to small guesthouses and short-term rentals, so lock those in a bit sooner than downtown chains.

Locals putting up out-of-town guests usually point them to short-term rentals in the Thomas Square or Starland blocks, or small inns in Victorian-era houses south of the historic squares. These areas put you within a 15-minute walk of the design studios and bars on Bull Street, away from the bachelorette crowds clustered on the riverfront.

Starland is generally fine during the day and early evening, with foot traffic around the cafes and galleries on Bull Street and Desoto Avenue. After dark, blocks get quiet quickly and lighting is uneven. Stick to main corridors, use a rideshare for anything beyond a few blocks, and avoid cutting through unlit lanes between the commercial strip and residential streets.

Starland itself has very few traditional hotels - it's mostly residential with converted commercial buildings. You'll find a handful of small inns and renovated bungalows offered as short-term rentals. For full-service boutique properties, look at the southern edge of the historic district, about a 20-minute walk or 6-minute drive north, which keeps Starland reachable on foot.

January and August are the softest months. January is cool and quiet after the holidays, with rates often 30-40% below spring peaks. August is hot, sticky, and prone to afternoon thunderstorms, which keeps leisure demand low. Avoid mid-March entirely - St. Patrick's Day pushes rates to the year's highest and most properties require multi-night minimums.

Tip housekeeping $3-5 per night, left daily rather than at checkout since staff rotate. Bellhops get $1-2 per bag, valet $2-5 when the car is returned. Concierge tips are optional but $5-20 for restaurant bookings or hard-to-get reservations is standard. Cash is preferred. At small Savannah inns, breakfast servers also expect 18-20% if there's table service.

Standard check-in is 3 or 4 PM in Savannah, with checkout at 11 AM. Most properties will hold luggage from late morning so you can start walking the squares or grab lunch in Starland. Early check-in before 1 PM is rarely guaranteed - if you land on a morning flight, ask at booking and call the property directly the day before.
