Yes - Shanghai is among the safest large cities globally, and the Concession is one of its calmest districts. Walking back at 2am is routine. Watch for electric scooters on sidewalks and silent bike lanes rather than crime. Carry your passport or a photo of the ID page; police occasionally check foreigners, particularly near sensitive dates, and hotels are required to register your stay.

Yes, this is where Shanghai's boutique scene concentrates. Restored 1920s lane houses and Art Deco mansions have been converted into 20-40 room properties, often with courtyard cafes and design-led interiors. Expect 1,200-2,500 RMB per night. Book directly with the property when possible - international booking sites sometimes mislabel addresses, and the lane (longtang) entrances can be hard to find on first arrival.

Standard check-in is 2pm or 3pm. Most hotels will store luggage from morning and call when a room opens early, often by noon if availability allows.
