For cherry blossom season (late March to early April) and autumn foliage in November, book 3-4 weeks ahead. These windows fill and prices climb. Golden Week (late April to early May) tightens hard, so lock that in 4-6 weeks out. For summer and winter outside the New Year holiday, 1-2 weeks is plenty.

Most smaller hotels and guesthouses in Shimokitazawa do not include breakfast, and that's fine. The area has strong morning cafes serving toast sets and pour-over from around 8:00. Bigger business hotels near the station sometimes offer an optional Japanese-Western buffet for 1,500-2,500 yen, but skipping it and walking five minutes gets you something better.

Don't tip. Japanese hotels do not expect or want gratuities, and staff may chase you down to return cash left in the room. Service is included in the rate. At high-end ryokan, a small gift from your home country handed to the okami on arrival is a nicer gesture than money.

Yes, very. Tokyo overall has low street crime, and Shimokitazawa is residential with families, students, and theatre-goers walking the lanes until late. The narrow alleys are well-lit near the station and quieter further out. Solo travellers and women routinely walk back to accommodation after midnight without issue. Standard urban awareness is enough.

A handful, yes. The recent redevelopment around the station added a few small design-led hotels and hostels with private rooms, mostly 20-40 rooms, often built into mixed-use buildings with ground-floor cafes or bookshops. Expect 12,000-25,000 yen per night for a double. Book direct when possible - some don't list on the big aggregator sites.

Standard check-in is 15:00 or 16:00, and Tokyo hotels enforce it. Early check-in before noon is rarely granted even if you ask. What they will do reliably is store your luggage from morning, so drop bags, get a coin locker code or claim ticket, and head out. Coming from Narita or Haneda, this is the normal routine.

Tokyoites visiting from other parts of Japan usually pick business hotels near a major JR loop station for transit convenience, not neighbourhood character. For a stay that feels like living here rather than visiting, residential pockets one or two stops off the loop - Shimokitazawa, Sangenjaya, Nakameguro - offer quieter mornings, local coffee shops, and a short train into the centre.
