Book 2-3 weeks ahead for general visits, and 4-6 weeks for Cardinals home stands, Mardi Gras weekend in Soulard (February), and graduation weekends in May. Summer weekends fill faster than weekdays, so a week or two of lead time covers most off-peak stays. Downtown rates spike during conventions at the convention center, so check the event calendar before locking in dates.

Visitors with friends in town usually end up in the Central West End, Lafayette Square, or the Grove - walkable neighborhoods with bars and restaurants. For Cherokee Street access, staying in Tower Grove South or Benton Park puts you within a 10-minute drive or a flat bike ride. Downtown is convenient for sports but quiet after work hours.

The commercial stretch is active during the day and on weekend evenings when galleries and bars draw crowds. Side streets get quiet after dark. Use normal city awareness: park in lit areas, don't leave anything visible in your car. Most visitors stay in adjacent neighborhoods like Benton Park or Tower Grove East and walk or drive in.

Cherokee Street itself has short-term rentals in converted storefronts and a few guesthouses above shops rather than traditional hotels. For boutique properties, look 10-15 minutes north toward downtown or west toward the Central West End, where renovated historic buildings have been turned into independent hotels. Book rentals directly when possible to avoid platform fees.

Tip housekeeping $3-5 per night, left daily rather than at checkout since staff rotate. Bellhops get $2 per bag, valet $2-5 on retrieval. Concierge tips are optional, $5-20 for substantive help like hard-to-get reservations. Room service usually includes a service charge already; check the bill before adding more.

January and February are cheapest citywide, excluding Mardi Gras weekend in Soulard. Mid-week rates in August also drop because of heat and humidity. Avoid early April (baseball opening), early October (playoff potential), and any weekend with a major convention. Sunday and Monday nights consistently price lower than Friday and Saturday.

Standard check-in runs 3-4 PM, checkout 11 AM. Most St. Louis hotels will hold luggage from late morning if your room isn't ready. Early check-in is usually possible by noon if you ask at booking or call the morning of arrival; chain loyalty members get priority. Expect a fee for guaranteed early arrival before noon.
