The coolest neighborhoods in Bilbao.

This site exists to give one answer per city, and for Bilbao that answer is Bilbao La Vieja. But we walked the other candidates before we called it. Three neighborhoods came close enough to argue about. Here is the shortlist, ranked, with the reasoning shown.

Bilbao La Vieja The pick

Bilbi won by accident, which is the best way to win. Deusto's creative turn comes with a masterplan and a tech campus. Irala's charm is painted on, literally. Bilbao La Vieja got interesting the hard way, through artists, migrants, and collectives taking cheap space and doing something with it. That shows in the density: a bookshop like ANTI - Liburudenda, a studio like serie_be, and bars like Taska Beltz and Nervión kafetegi-taberna within a few blocks of each other, none of them opened for tourists. The neighborhood is still moving, and that matters more than anything on a map. The others have settled into what they are. Bilbi hasn't decided yet, and that uncertainty is where cool actually lives.

Indautxu

Indautxu is what a neighborhood looks like after the change is finished. The professional class arrived a decade ago and stayed. Calle Maestro García Rivero runs the serious pintxos at prices 20 to 30 percent above the old town. Calle Pozas handles the match-day crowd. Skip the chains ringing Plaza Indautxu and go two streets in, and get the brioche at Martina de Zuricalday before 11am. It came close because the eating is genuinely good and nobody is performing. It missed because there is no friction left. Nothing here is going to surprise you in five years.

Deusto

Deusto turned 100 as part of Bilbao in 2024 and threw ten days of fiestas around Plaza San Pedro to prove it still knows who it is. Students, rowing clubs, cheap lunch menus, an art space in La Terminal. The real story is Zorrotzaurre, the industrial island next door, now getting rebuilt under a Zaha Hadid plan with thousands of new homes and a game design school already in. If that island fills with studios instead of just apartments, Deusto takes the top spot within a decade. For now the energy is planned, not earned, and we rank earned higher.

Iralabarri

Irala climbs the hill in District 7 with painted facades along Avenida Kirikiño that photograph better than anywhere else in Bilbao. The scene is small and local: Taberna Goitibera pours the drinks, Aitana does the tortillas, Reyes Católicos goes pedestrian and hosts the DJ nights during fiestas. The commerce association runs its own markets in Plaza Kirikiño rather than waiting for investors. It came close on pride and views. It missed because the draw is houses, not a scene. People are already calling it the Notting Hill of Bilbao, which tells you the Instagram crowd found it first.
