For July and August, book three to four weeks ahead, when beach traffic and Aste Nagusia in August push rates up. September events fill rooms, so give yourself a couple of weeks. Spring and November visits need only a week or two. BBK Live in early July is the one squeeze worth booking a month or more out, since the city genuinely sells out.

Smaller guesthouses and apartments in Bilbi typically do not include breakfast - locals eat out, and you'll do better at a nearby cafe for 3-5 euros (coffee, tostada, juice). Mid-range hotels often offer breakfast as a 10-15 euro add-on. Skip it. The cafes around the area serve better food at half the price.

Yes, though it has a grittier feel than the Ensanche across the river. The area was rough in the 1990s and still has visible street life, but violent crime is rare. Watch your phone and bag at night on quieter streets near the river. Women travelers generally report feeling comfortable. Police presence is steady, and the area is well-lit on main streets.

A handful, mostly converted townhouses and design-led apartment buildings opened in the last five years as the neighborhood gentrified. Expect 90-150 euros a night for a double, with exposed brick, local ceramics, and small footprints. Larger boutique stock sits across the river in the Ensanche or near the old town. Book directly when possible - many small operators charge less off-platform.

Minimal. Leave 1-2 euros for housekeeping if you stay multiple nights, and 1 euro per bag for porters at higher-end hotels.
