Nashville

is East Nashville

East Atlanta Village is small enough to cover on foot in twenty minutes: a few blocks of Flat Shoals and Glenwood, a dive-leaning music room in The EARL, murals on every spare brick wall. The point is the night, and the night stays in one place. East Nashville is bigger and slower to reveal itself, spread along Woodland and Gallatin with tattoo shops next to wine bars and a 9.7-mile greenway at the back door. You'll drive or bike between stops there. Atlanta gives you a tighter, grittier weekend with an easier walk home; Nashville gives you more to do over more days, and songwriters at the next table instead of on stage.

The Brooklyn of

Atlanta is East Atlanta Village.

East Atlanta Village sits three miles from Downtown Atlanta, its commercial strip running along Flat Shoals and Glenwood Avenues. On a Tuesday afternoon the sidewalks are quiet and The EARL is setting up for a mid-week show. Saturday runs dinner at Banshee or Argosy on Glenwood, then live music at The EARL, all inside the neighborhood core. Living Walls murals cover the brick in between.

The East Atlanta Strut has run every September since 1998 without missing a year, a volunteer-run festival that sends its proceeds to neighborhood nonprofits.

Nashville is East Nashville.

Woodland Street runs through the center of East Nashville, lined with restaurants that care more about the food than the Instagram. Tattoo shops sit next to natural wine bars. Saturday mornings start slow at a coffee shop on Gallatin Ave, and Sunday nights end at a honky-tonk that doesn't feel like a tourist trap. The songwriters live here. So does everyone else worth knowing.

The Shelby Bottoms Greenway runs 9.7 miles through East Nashville's Cumberland River floodplain, putting riverside trails, wetlands, and wildlife within walking distance of front porches across the neighborhood.
