New Orleans

is Bywater

East Atlanta Village is a strip: Flat Shoals and Glenwood, a few blocks where you eat, drink, and catch a show at The EARL without moving your car. Bywater is looser and slower, shotgun houses in pastel paint, a wine bar in someone's backyard that turns into a concert, and nobody checking the time. Atlanta's version is built around nights out; the sidewalks are dead on a Tuesday afternoon and full by Saturday. Bywater works in daylight too, especially along the river at Crescent Park. If you want a tight, walkable run of bars and music, pick East Atlanta. If you want the weirdness to spill out of the venues and onto the street, pick Bywater.

The Brooklyn of

Atlanta is East Atlanta Village.

East Atlanta Village sits southeast of downtown, its commercial strip running along Flat Shoals and Glenwood Avenues. On a Tuesday afternoon the sidewalks are quiet and The EARL is setting up for a mid-week show. Saturday runs dinner at Banshee or Argosy on Glenwood, then live music at The EARL, all inside the neighborhood core. Living Walls murals cover the brick in between.

The East Atlanta Strut has run every September since 1998 without missing a year, a volunteer-run festival that sends its proceeds to neighborhood nonprofits.

New Orleans is Bywater.

Bywater is where New Orleans gets weird on its own terms. Shotgun houses painted in sherbet colors, backyard wine bars that turn into full-blown concerts, and nobody rushing anywhere. The creative energy here is real, not for show. Walk Chartres Street on a Sunday morning and you'll feel it in your chest.

Crescent Park turns Bywater's derelict wharves and rail sidings into 20 acres of public open space, a riverfront greenway stretching 1.4 miles along the Mississippi River.
