The Brooklyn
of Detroit is
Corktown.
Corktown is Detroit's oldest surviving neighborhood and it wears that history without being precious about it. Michigan Avenue is the spine, lined with converted brick buildings housing coffee roasters, cocktail bars, and some of the best food in the city. The recently restored Michigan Central Station looms like a cathedral at the western end. It's the rare place where old Detroit and new Detroit actually coexist without awkwardness.
Ford's nearly $1 billion restoration of Michigan Central Station anchors a 30-acre campus, while Michigan Avenue now hosts 20+ independent bars and restaurants within roughly a mile.
Other cool neighborhoods in Detroit.
Midtown
Midtown clusters around the DIA and Wayne State. Gallery openings, late-night ramen at places you'd walk past twice, and the best bookstores in the city.
Eastern Market
Eastern Market is a Saturday institution. The shed market has been running since 1891. Go early, buy flowers, eat a pierogi, wander the surrounding murals.
West Village
West Village is residential and quiet. Small shops on Agnes and Kercheval, front porch culture, and a pace the rest of the city doesn't keep.

Walk south of Michigan Ave to the residential streets. The Victorian architecture between Porter and Bagley is some of the best in the city.
