The Brooklyn
of Hanoi is
Tay Ho.
Tay Ho (West Lake) is the coolest neighborhood in Hanoi for specialty coffee roasters, craft beer breweries, and dawn runs to Quảng Bá Flower Market.
Tay Ho is where Hanoi exhales. The lake is enormous, the streets are wider, and the pace drops to something almost manageable. Expats and young Vietnamese creatives have colonized the alleys off Tô Ngọc Vân, filling them with specialty coffee, craft beer spots, and restaurants that wouldn't exist in the Old Quarter. Mornings here smell like lotus flowers and fresh bánh mì.
West Lake spans 500 hectares with 17km of shoreline, and the surrounding district packs in temples, pagodas, and cultural sites within walking distance of the water.
Other cool neighborhoods in Hanoi.
Truc Bach
Truc Bach sits between the Old Quarter chaos and West Lake calm. Tiny lakeside beer spots, excellent bún chả, and that particular energy of a neighborhood not yet fully discovered.
Hoan Kiem (French Quarter edge)
The French Quarter edge of Hoan Kiem has the colonial architecture, the bookshops, the egg coffee originals. Beautiful but increasingly polished. Still worth a slow afternoon walk.
Ba Dinh
Ba Dinh is government buildings and wide Soviet-era boulevards, but the residential lanes hide incredible phở stalls and some of the city's oldest temples. Quiet and deeply local.
Where to go in Tay Ho.
West Lake is where you stay when you want Hanoi with room to breathe.
The alleys off To Ngoc Van hold Hanoi's most interesting eating and drinking.
Show up to the Quảng Bá Flower Market at 2am when the trucks arrive with mountains of tuberose and chrysanthemum.

The bánh tôm (shrimp fritters) at the Truc Bach end of Thanh Niên road are better than any restaurant version in the city.
