Book six to eight weeks ahead for cherry blossom season (late March to mid-April) and autumn foliage (mid-November to early December). These are Kyoto's peak periods and rooms in central wards sell out first, so small popular hotels need the most lead time. For summer or January-February, one to two weeks is plenty. Avoid Golden Week (late April to early May) unless you book about two months out.

Smaller machiya guesthouses and ryokan-style inns in Nishijin often include a simple Japanese breakfast: rice, grilled fish, miso soup, pickles. Business hotels and budget chains typically charge 1,500-2,500 yen extra, or skip it entirely. Check the booking fine print. Nishijin has few morning cafes, so an included breakfast saves a walk south toward Imadegawa.

Don't tip. Bellhops, housekeepers, and front desk staff will refuse cash and may chase you down to return it. Service is included in the room rate. At traditional ryokan, some guests leave a small thank-you envelope (kokorozuke) of 1,000-3,000 yen for the okami when checking in, but this is optional and rare among foreign visitors.

Nishijin is one of Kyoto's quieter residential districts and very safe at any hour. Streets empty out by 21:00 because most businesses are workshops and family homes, not bars. Solo travelers and women report no issues walking back from the bus stop late. The main caution is navigation: lanes are narrow and poorly lit, so download offline maps.

Yes, mostly converted machiya townhouses run as one- to six-room properties. Expect tatami floors, low ceilings, shared or compact bathrooms, and hosts who speak limited English but provide written guides. Rates run 18,000-40,000 yen per night for two. A handful of design-led small hotels have opened near the weaving district in the last five years, with Western beds and private baths.

Kyoto residents don't stay in Kyoto, but visiting Japanese travelers favor areas around Kyoto Station for transit convenience, or Gion and Higashiyama for sightseeing. Repeat visitors who want quiet pick Nishijin, Nishioji, or the northern Kamogawa banks. Business travelers cluster around Karasuma and Shijo. For a residential feel without isolation, the area between Imadegawa and Marutamachi stations works well.

Standard check-in is 15:00 or 16:00 and Kyoto hotels enforce this strictly, especially ryokan and machiya where staff need turnover time. Most properties hold luggage from morning at no charge. Coin lockers at Kyoto Station and major subway stops fit a carry-on for 400-700 yen. A few business hotel chains offer paid early check-in from 12:00 if rooms are ready.
