Avoid Midsummer week (around June 23-24) without a reservation - many Latvians leave the city, but tourist demand peaks and prices spike.

Small guesthouses and apartment-style stays in the Miera iela area usually skip breakfast, which suits the neighborhood - cafes on the main street open by 8 or 9 and serve proper coffee, porridge, and pastries for under 10 euros. Larger hotels closer to the centre typically include a buffet. Confirm at booking; breakfast add-ons run 12-18 euros.

Tipping is modest in Latvia. Leave 1-2 euros for housekeeping per night if you'd like, and 1-2 euros for a porter handling bags. Concierge tips aren't expected unless they've arranged something specific. Service charges are rarely added to hotel bills. Miera iela is safe day and night. It's a residential creative district with families, students, and regulars at the cafes. Standard city awareness applies after midnight on quieter side streets. The walk to Old Town takes 15-20 minutes through well-lit areas. Trams run along the main road until around midnight, and taxis via Bolt are cheap if you're out later.

The neighborhood leans toward small guesthouses, design apartments, and a handful of independent boutique properties in restored wooden or pre-war buildings. Expect 8-20 rooms, owner-operated, with prices typically 70-120 euros a night. Chain hotels don't operate here - for those you'll need the centre or near the station. Book directly when possible; small operators often discount off platform rates.

November and the first three weeks of January are the cheapest, with rates often 40-50% below summer. February and March are also affordable but cold (often below freezing). If you can handle short daylight and grey skies, you'll get four-star properties for the price of a hostel dorm in July. Avoid the Christmas market weeks in December - prices jump.
