Book 6-8 weeks ahead for summer (December to February) and during rugby internationals or events at the main waterfront arena. Te Aro fills fast during the international arts festival in February and March. Winter is easier; 1-2 weeks lead time usually suffices. Avoid arriving without a booking during Wellington On a Plate in August, when food crowds spike.

Most mid-range and boutique properties in Te Aro do not bundle breakfast by default. Rates typically run NZD 25-35 per person if added at booking. Skip it. The area's cafe density is the highest in New Zealand, and a flat white plus eggs at a nearby roastery costs around NZD 20 and is consistently better than hotel buffets.

Tipping is not expected at New Zealand hotels. Staff are paid a living wage and service charges are not added. You can leave a few dollars for housekeeping or round up for an exceptional concierge favour, but nobody will chase you down. Bellhops do not hover for tips. Same applies to taxis and Ubers - round up if you like.

Wellingtonians hosting visiting family tend to book serviced apartments in Te Aro or along the Cuba Street end of the central city, where you can walk everywhere without a car. For quieter stays, locals point guests toward the harbour-edge suburbs reached by a short bus ride. Avoid the airport-area motels unless you have an early flight - they're isolated from the walkable core.

Te Aro is safe by international standards. The main concern is late-night noise and occasional rowdiness on Courtenay Place on Friday and Saturday after midnight, when bars empty out. Pick a hotel a block or two off that strip for quieter sleep. Petty theft from unlocked cars happens; don't leave bags visible. Walking alone at night is generally fine.

Yes. Te Aro has the city's densest cluster of design-led independent hotels, mostly converted from early 20th-century commercial buildings between Cuba Street and the waterfront. Expect 20-60 rooms, ground-floor bars open to the public, and rates of NZD 220-380 in shoulder season. Book directly with the property - Wellington boutiques often hold back their best rooms from the big aggregator sites.

Standard check-in is 14:00 or 15:00 across Wellington. Most Te Aro hotels will store luggage from morning and let you use the lobby wifi. Early check-in before noon is rarely free; expect a half-day surcharge if a room is ready. If you land on a morning flight, drop bags and walk the waterfront or Cuba Street until your room opens.
