What to do
in Canggu.

6 places to spend an afternoon.

Canggu's rhythm is surf in the morning, wander in the afternoon, drink at sunset. Batu Bolong beach handles the first part. Old Man's handles the last. In between, browse ceramics shops and vintage markets in the sois between Jalan Batu Bolong and the rice paddies - that's where the neighborhood lives.

Best things to do in Canggu.

Things to do in Canggu means things to do outdoors, usually with a Bintang in hand. Batu Bolong is the daytime anchor, Old Man's takes the night, and Black Sand Brewery fills the gap between with hazy IPAs and the post-surf crowd. Galleries and museums aren't the point here.

Best shops in Canggu.

Canggu's shopping skews handmade and slow: Flook The Label's Pererenan flagship moves at 7-10 days per crochet set, while The Jungle Trader stocks Borneo baskets and screen-printed textiles in Berawa. The Locals keeps the edit tight and actually Balinese, not airport-gift Balinese.

Practical info

Getting around Canggu.

Is Canggu walkable?
Not really. Sidewalks are inconsistent or missing, traffic is constant on the main roads, and distances between cafes, surf spots, and beach clubs add up fast in the heat. Most visitors rent a scooter or use Gojek and Grab for short rides. Walking works only within a single strip, like the lane down to a beach or between neighboring warungs.
How do I get to Canggu from the airport?
Allow 60-90 minutes for the roughly 20 km from Ngurah Rai, longer in late afternoon traffic. Use the official airport taxi counter or book Grab or Gojek from outside the terminal pickup zone. Expect rates around 250,000-400,000 IDR. Pre-booked hotel transfers cost more but skip the haggling. Avoid arriving during Nyepi, when all transport stops.
Does Uber work in Bali?
No. Uber pulled out of Southeast Asia in 2018, so most visitors open Gojek first, with Grab as the other big option. Both do cars and motorbike rides, which beat the traffic on narrow roads. App coverage gets patchy in the hills and beach towns, so locals also use Bluebird taxis or arrange a private driver over WhatsApp - your hotel can set this up in minutes.
Can I rent a bike in Canggu?
Scooters dominate, not bicycles. Rentals run about 70,000-100,000 IDR per day, less by the month. You legally need an International Driving Permit with motorcycle endorsement, and police checkpoints do happen. Wear the helmet, fill up at proper petrol stations rather than roadside bottles when possible, and photograph any existing scratches before riding off.
What's the best month for outdoor activities in Bali?
May, June, and September are the sweet spot - dry season, fewer crowds than July-August, and surf on the west coast is reliable. July and August are busiest and priciest. The wet season runs roughly November to March with daily afternoon downpours, though mornings often stay clear. Surfers shift to the east coast (Sanur, Nusa Dua) during the wet months.
Is it safe to walk around Canggu at night?
Generally yes, but the risks are traffic and dark, uneven pavement rather than crime. Scooters come fast on narrow lanes with weak street lighting. Bring a phone torch, stick to main roads after midnight, and book a ride rather than walking home drunk. Petty theft from bags on parked scooters is the most common issue, so don't leave valuables visible.
What are the best free things to do in Canggu?
Sunset on the black-sand beach is the headline act, ideally watched from the sand with a warung beer rather than a paid lounger. Walk or scoot the rice paddy shortcuts inland in the early morning before the heat. Watch surfers at the reef breaks, sit in on a temple ceremony respectfully from outside, and browse the Sunday morning markets.
What are typical gallery and shop opening hours in Canggu?
Most independent boutiques open around 10:00 or 11:00 and close by 21:00 or 22:00, later than you'd expect because evening is when people shop after the beach. Concept stores often close one day a week, commonly Sunday or Monday. Galleries keep shorter hours, usually 11:00-18:00. During Nyepi (March), everything shuts completely for 24 hours.
