Book 3 to 4 weeks ahead for July, August, and the December-January holiday stretch, when Australian school breaks and Indonesian long weekends compress availability in Canggu. For shoulder months like May, June, and September, one to two weeks is usually enough. Small popular places in Canggu and Ubud fill sooner, so lock those in earlier. Have a confirmed room before Nyepi, the day of silence in March, when the island shuts down entirely.

Most boutique stays and villas in Canggu include breakfast, often a simple set menu with fruit, eggs cooked to order, and coffee or fresh juice. Hostels and budget guesthouses sometimes charge extra. Many guests skip the included option anyway - Canggu's cafe scene is the main draw, and breakfast is what this area does best.

Tipping is appreciated but not expected. For housekeeping, 10,000-20,000 rupiah per day left on the pillow is generous. Porters get around 10,000 rupiah per bag. Many mid-range and upscale hotels add a 21% service and tax charge to the bill, which technically covers gratuity. Cash in small rupiah notes is preferred over foreign currency.

Canggu is safe day and night, with the main risks being scooter accidents and petty theft from unlocked villas. Stick to reputable scooter rentals, wear a helmet, and use the lockbox in your room. Streets get dark and potholed after sunset, so walking with a phone light helps. Solo travelers, including women, generally find the area comfortable.

Canggu is dominated by boutique stays - small design-led hotels, private pool villas, and surf-focused guesthouses outnumber large chain properties by a wide margin. Expect concrete-and-teak architecture, plunge pools, and on-site cafes. Properties cluster in three zones: the beach side, the rice-field interior, and the area closer to Berawa. Each has a different pace and noise level.

February is typically the cheapest month - it's the peak of rainy season, with afternoon downpours and choppy surf on the west coast. Late October and early November also offer good rates before the December rush. Expect discounts of 30-50% versus July pricing. Rain rarely lasts all day, so the trade-off works for travelers focused on cafes, spas, and yoga.

Standard check-in is 14:00 or 15:00, but most Canggu properties will store luggage and let you use the pool from arrival. If you land on an early morning flight from Australia or Asia, message the hotel ahead - many offer paid early check-in for around 50% of a night's rate, or free if the room is ready.
