Veli Varoš points you uphill and seaward, not toward another cocktail bar. Hit the Green Market at Stari Pazar by 8am, then climb into Marjan for the cliff chapels and hermit caves before doubling back to Meštrović Gallery, where the sculptor's own villa earns the entry fee twice over.
Twenty-plus kilometres of pine-scented trails wind above the city through medieval chapels carved into cliffs, hermit caves, a 16th-century Jewish cemetery, and lookouts where you hear only cicadas. Start at Prva Vidilica just above Varoš for the quick panorama, or commit to the full loop out to Telegrin at 178 metres.
Croatia's greatest sculptor displayed in the seaside villa he designed himself, surrounded by a Mediterranean garden of bronze figures overlooking the water. The 16th-century chapel five minutes up the road houses his Life of Christ cycle - 28 wood reliefs carved over 35 years that will stop you cold.
