in Veli Varoš.

Book July and August accommodation by February or March. Split fills up with ferry traffic to the islands and Game of Thrones tourism, and Veli Varoš has limited inventory since most buildings are small stone houses converted to apartments. June and September are easier but still want six to eight weeks lead time. Off-season (November to March) you can often book a week ahead.

Veli Varoš is mostly small guesthouses, apartments, and a handful of design-led conversions inside old stone fishermen's houses. Expect four to eight rooms per property, exposed stone walls, and steep staircases (no lifts). Larger branded hotels sit along the waterfront and west toward the beaches. If you want a pool or full reception desk, look outside the neighborhood.

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Leave 10-20 kuna (now roughly 1.50-3 euros) for housekeeping per stay, and 1-2 euros for porters. At restaurants, round up or leave 10% for good service. Cash in euros is preferred since Croatia adopted the euro in 2023. Don't tip the owner directly at small family-run guesthouses; it can feel awkward.

Very safe, day and night. The neighborhood is residential, with families and older locals who've lived there for generations. The main caution is the lanes themselves: stone steps are uneven, poorly lit after midnight, and confusing on arrival. Pin your accommodation on offline maps before you land, and bring a small flashlight or use your phone torch.

Locals don't stay in Split - they live here. But when family visits from Zagreb or the islands, they tend to choose neighborhoods just west of the center like Veli Varoš and Meje, or further out toward the Marjan peninsula. These areas have parking, quieter mornings, and walking access to the old town without the suitcase-wheel noise of the waterfront.

Small guesthouses and apartments typically don't include breakfast - kitchens are usually equipped instead. The few proper boutique hotels in the area do offer it, often a continental spread with local cheese, prosciutto, and pastries. Either way, the neighborhood has bakeries opening around 6:00 and konobas serving coffee from 7:00, so breakfast out is easy and cheap (5-8 euros).

Standard check-in is 14:00 or 15:00. Most Veli Varoš properties are small and owner-operated, so early arrival means waiting unless you message ahead - many hosts will store luggage from late morning. Ferry arrivals from Italy land around 7:00, so plan a coffee and a swim at the city beaches before your room is ready. Late check-in usually needs advance notice.
